Just a photo-blog today, lovely swell at the weekend but i’ve not too much to say about it this morning and have to get on with the day job. Here’s a random selection of shots from the hundreds i took on Saturday, the camera makes some of the waves look mellow, but there really were a few heavy closeout sets too, it made for great watching at the bay, and a few epic rides between the beatings.
There were quite a few eye witness’s to Al Reed’s full on barrel ride, but sadly i dont think anyone manged to get a shot of it, there is one included here of him going into one another one, but he didnt make it out this time.
Hey Jas
Love your site and blog. Lots of beautiful images of a pumping Freshwater Bay.
I’m just wondering how that guy went with the paddle about to go up that face in No1 shot on this page!
Cheers
dash
Some nice photo’s of good big waves!

Blackwood
hi dash, the surfer had just about enough speed to make it past him, but the SUP guy got properly wiped out ๐ i’ve just looked back and watched the sequence, ouch !
Hi Jason,
I was on the SUP, and have to admit to spending 3 hours of getting absolutely pummelled, for the sake of catching a handful of waves but it was worth it! Thanks for the photos. Will try and do better next time!
Eric
PS Apologies to the surfer – I hope I didn’t ruin his ride.
hello eric, fair play for owning up ๐ i’ve got a few more shots of you that i’ll be posting in the coming days, some are pretty cool. My personal opinion is that i’m not sure the bay is the place for SUP’s on a day like that, unless your really experienced, its a bit dangerous for the others out there with that huge board, but then again, i dont make the rules, its a free world (mostly) and you did show a lot of balls and commitment in some heavy waves.
I’d have gone to the Pearl if anyone else had been out there, as I think it suits the SUP more. I agree the SUP was not the tool for the day, or the location, but my surfboard needs fixing, and I couldn’t resist getting out. Having said that I couldn’t believe how few surfers were out, where were they all?
Pearl would’ve been amazing to see, reckon there would’ve been some epic set waves there with the size of swell and strength of the offshores, and i dont blame you for not going out there alone!
A fair amount of surfers did make it in at the bay, but they were spread out all day, there was a dozen in first thing, and that number remained pretty steady throughout the day with all the comings and goings, maybe you got lucky and had a quiet time?
Hi Jason, Thanks for the mention, I’ve had quite a few people commenting on “that barrel”, shame no-one got the sequence shot. This was an exeptional day, I really like the photo in the top right corner.
Cheers Al, maybe a shot will turn up one day, there were a lot of people with cameras there, otherwise you’ll just have to remember it from the inside ๐
I’ll never forget that “mental photograph”, it’s right there, “branded”, on the front of my brain!
The one in the top right, has a heart in my wake, and I do Love surfing very much!
