So, the swell has peaked now and there’s time to look back at more photos, here’s another batch of shots from Thursday 2nd, shot straight into the evening sun again so there’s a few more mono edits trying to make the most of the back-light and silhouettes.

The next batch will be from mid afternoon and the pushing tide on Friday 3rd which although it wasn’t what you’d call really big, we still saw a broken board, a broken head and a snapped leash!

September Swells Lighting up Compton Bay!

September Swells Photo Blog Part one.

South coast surfers spend long flat summer days dreaming of September swells arriving from far-off tropical storms and hurricanes, this year they arrived right on time! A lovely long range groundswell made its way up the channel yesterday (2nd Sept) and built through today (3rd Sept), fingers crossed it keeps coming for the weekend!

It’s the first solid swell since i got the Canon 7d, so as well as enjoying some proper waves myself, i made sure to hang around and take lots of photos too. The first two batches are shot into the early evening sun, so at times all i got was shimmering silhouettes (which is why i went for a few monochrome shots edited in Lightroom) but every now and then i got a little back-lit beauty too.

There’s a few shots of Joe Truman making the most of it and finding a little shade on a warm sunny afternoon.

Part Two (more from 2nd Sept) and parts 3 & 4 (more from 3rd Sept) will follow as soon as i get time to upload and look through all the shots i took (so maybe when the swell is over?)

This ones for my friends Pacey & SJ who are travelling the world looking for waves and generally having a great time, missing you guys, come back soon and do some baby-sitting

It was shot back in February (when every day seemed to bring more waves) on the same morning as the ‘headless surfer triptych’. You can see that triptych and more from that day in the headless surfer blog.

Not much in the way of new swell to talk about, so i’ve put together a few shots from last month, a few days after the ‘perfect saturday’ when there were still a few nice ones sneaking quietly through and if you were in the right place at the right time, you could have a session all by yourself. Nothing really special in way of waves or action, but I think the best thing about these shots is that pacey looks like he’s got no head in three of them!

and a bonus sequence of pacey making the most of a little one that same day, the 12 shots took place over 13 seconds, but somehow its become 30 seconds long in iMovie because i messed about with the ‘ken burns’ settings and i dont really know what i’m doing

I’m still sifting through the hundreds of pictures taken on Saturday the 6th feb, i noticed a lot of people throwing their hands in the air that day, the offshore winds created plenty of critical sections where that extra bit of balance was required, and todays photo-blog is a little collection based on that.

Its not very often a surfing shot makes it to the front page of Flickr explore these days (i dont think i’ve had one out of the 596 that have made it to explore) so i was really pleased to see “Life is just a series of peaks and troughs” make it there this week.

The shot was taken during the good swell on the 6th Feb 2010, you can see more from that day in the ‘You should’ve been here yesterday…’ blog
