This shot was conceived as an idea to update one of my all time fave photos “Portrait of a Psychedelic Surfer” but this time with a female perspective and a lady surfer. Of course it has nothing like the same spark, as this was contrived where the original was a spontaneous reaction to the way the elements combined on a special day.

But it has a certain something that i like, the quirky englishness of the way she’s standing there in her stripy pink wellies! and the way the long shadow anchors her to the corner of the frame.

It was hastily arranged (in a few hours) with the first willing female i could find in reaction to a request from a potential client who was on a deadline, i don’t think it will come to fruition with that particular customer, but I thought it was worth giving the shot its moment in the spotlight here.

Massive thanks to Sally for being game to turn up at short notice and wade about in a very cold english channel (the boots came off a bit later) whilst i tried to figure out the best way to deal with shooting almost directly into about a billion megawatts of direct sunlight.

Real waves on their way though, there’s a nice big deep low pressure system in the North Atlantic heading our way soon!

Sitting here today, on a miserable grey December day, looking out the window at howling on-shores blowing out any chance of getting any decent waves, and i’m looking back over a few pics from a surf session that i voluntarily missed out on a few weeks back. I wasn’t too busy, i didn’t have to be somewhere else, I wasn’t feeling poorly, or even lazy, and i didn’t even have a hangover as the title suggests… it’s just that I had recently had too much of a good thing, and for some reason (that seems insane now) I decided the little clean waves weren’t worth the effort and spent half an hour not making my mind up on the beach instead of just getting suited up and going in for a bit of fun. What a knob-head.

My reasons seemed sound enough at the time, I’d surfed some amazing waves the night before (so only about 12 hours previously) and for most of the previous week (November was an epic month for surf this year on the South Coast), and as the swell had dropped off so much, i didn’t want to erase and replace the great waves i still had in my mind, with the little tiddlers on offer in front of me.

In my defence, i didn’t completely waste my time, at least i took a few photos, managing to catch a few rare photos of Paul Blackley surfing, the even more rare sight of Pacey on a longboard, the quite common sight of chris court falling off a SUP and few nice ones of a puppy playing fetch on the beach, but looking back at the pics now…. just stop thinking about it and get wet and have some fun, you never know when the winds gonna turn, and its been blowing onshore pretty much ever since.

Tidying up my old hard disks with tens of thousands of photos on them, and i found a few shots that got overlooked, neglected, or fell down the back of the sofa from a lovely swell that hit Freshwater Bay back in December 2009. I’ve cross-checked and i dont think any of these have been published before, and i think / hope they might be worth seeing the light of day!

Frost Bite surf comp!

****Update****
****Results and report from the first comp!*****

Report courtesy of Oliver Harvey & The Isle of Wight Surf Club

The first ‘Frost bite’ competition of six being held this winter, sponsored kindly by the boys at Rapanui was a great success.

Greeted with pretty grim onshore head-high waves at Compton, first up we saw the groms test the water. Both Robin & Dylan snagged plenty of waves each but Robin gradually took control with a couple of good waves to take the first event. The waves continue to prove challenging for the mens Open, as the pool of 16 riders entered the water in 4 man, 20 min heats.
Julie Tortajada, in the first quarter final, took the Ladies title getting several fun waves. From the first round the following progressed into the semis:

Heat 1:

1.Richard Gray

2. Jamie Whittle

Heat 2:

1. Nick Whittle

2. Foz Heat

Heat 3:

1. Jo Truman

2. Al Reed

Heat 4:

1. Doug Richards

2. Matt Harwood

Semi One saw Douglas Richards start to show his quality, making some nice aggressive turns , and following him after a somewhat slow start, Jo’s local knowledge paid dividends, hooking into some good little rights, his smooth style saw him up his wave count and into second place only 0.5 points behind Dougie & just ahead of Rich who surfed well in both his heats.

In Semi Two, Matt, keen to progress, started with a bang – getting several scores on the board in quick succession. Al also posted some scores whilst Jamie & Nick, who both showed good form earlier on, were quiet until the last quarter, when Nick started to make a come-back, but too little, too late saw Al & Matt progress into the final

The Final was closely fought battle , the waves failed to improve, which saw the judges favourite going into the final, Doug, making a subdued start. We did see glimmers of his solid style, but the waves just didn’t go his way. Matt, with a great high scoring first wave, continued to post some respectable scores, streaking ahead on wave count alone, Al found a solid right all the way into the inside, showing some style with cross-steps & smooth cutbacks. Jo’s consistency and nack for finding those fun inside walls, meant he edged ahead of Al into second and Matt taking the top spot with skill & tenacity.

Final Scores:

1.Matt Harwood 11.83

2. Jo Truman 11.53

3. Al Reed 10.16

4. Doug Richards 9.63

The IOW Surf Club would like to say a big thank you for all turning up to make it a great little event. Hopefully we’ll see even bigger competitor numbers, in the next round in the IOW Surf Club Frost Bite series, as what seems like a 1/3 of the IOW surfers return from their Indonesian adventures! Boys, you missed out today !

A big shout out for all girls & groms wanting to get involved. I’m sure Julie, Robin & Dylan would love to beat you in heat & there’s hoodies, t-shirts & other prizes to be won !

It costs £2.50 per comp for existing members

£10 for non-members, which gives your Isle of Wight Surf Club Membership also including your BSA Membership www.britsurf.co.uk/bsa-membership

And that brings me to a last big thank you to Rapanui , who are very generously sponsoring every event of the Frost Bite Series.

For those who haven’t heard of them, Rapanui are an award winning Eco-Fashion company based/born’n’bred on the Isle of Wight.

They make some damm tasty ethical clothing using natural organic fabrics and manufactured using renewable energy in a Fair Wear Foundation audited, wind powered factory. Check them out:

The original Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for charity in 2008. Joe is the inspirational little boy who touched people’s lives around the country and beyond. His story of hope and fighting against all the odds with a cheeky smile has made what could have been the worse of times the best of times.

With little over a week to go, Team Joe are getting ready for the memorial ‘Paddle for Life’ event taking place on Newquay harbour on the 23rd September.

Isle of Wight surfer Johnny Fryer is helping along with Ben Skinner, Tom Butler, Alan Stokes and many others

Promising to be bigger and better than last year; with over 150 paddlers of all ages registered to raise money for 20 charities. The 2010 Paddle for Life event welcomes the support of two of the many based Newquay companies who will be keeping the paddlers and audience fed and entertained. Robert Ellis, area manager for Bookers Wholesalershas kindly donated £700 worth of BBQ food while ‘Titan the Robot’, (as seen on C4’s Big Brother and the MTV Awards) will be making an appearance throughout the afternoon, keeping the crowds entertained.

With an outstanding amount of interest already shown and the sheer number of people willing to support and raise awareness for their chosen charities; founder for the Joe Way Appeal, Matt Way, shared his thoughts and feelings ahead of the event saying; “we sent out to inspire children and adults with Joes story and we are never disappointed, the support has been overwhelming and we are estimating 2000 people will watch the event live on line which should encourage donations from around the world to over 20 charities.”

Some of the biggest names in surfing will be at this event and with so much to do for the children this is an experience not to miss.

This event is for any age and any ability, you don’t need to be into surfing/paddling to enjoy yourself, it’s about raising awareness for your own charities, remembering your nearest and dearest that have been affected by an illness and most of all to keep the memory and what Joe’s cheeky way of dealing with the worst of times alive. The event will start next Thursday from 4pm.

The paddle team are aiming to raise £10,000 at this years event to celebrate Joe’s story for over 20 charities so don’t miss out on being part of this special little Cornish toddlers story.

For those of you that can’t make it in person, the event will be streamed live byTiger 24 and can be seen on www.joeway.co.uk.

OK, this is not my story, but its a pretty good day for isle of wight surfing so i wanted to cover it here, and the first thing to do is to get the right people credited for the words and images.

Thanks to Paul Blackley (my partner over at wight surf history) for putting this story together, and thanks to ‘the Newquay Surfer’ (http://www.newquaysurfer.org/) for allowing use of the video, and thanks to Annemarie Hughes (http://www.annemariehughes.com/) for allowing use of the images.

===========================================================

Johnny Fryer was crowned the 2010 Quiksilver British National Surfing Champion on August Bank Holiday weekend. The 2010 Quiksilver British National Surfing Championships in Association with with Roxy, Tiger 24, Gibson Guitar, DC, Monster Energy & Fistral Blue saw Twenty-five year old goofy-footer Johnny Fryer originally from the Isle of Wight surfing at his best at Fistral Beach, Newquay to claim the British title.

New young surfers like Luke Dillon and Toby Donachie made the competition very tough, and with over one hundred competitors taking part and six British Champion titles up for grabs in the open, seniors, women’s, masters, veterans and stand-up paddle boarding divisions the weather could not have been better.

The mens final was an all Cornish line up with Johnny Fryer now living in Newquay and Ollie Adams from Newquay, Jayce Robison from St Ives and Toby Donachie from St Merryn.

The competition conditions were extremely challenging for all concerned but the waves increased in size overnight on Saturday giving everyone a great climax to the event on Sunday with good waves and sunshine. Sunday saw an onshore wind help generate shoulder high waves throughout the day.

Johnny surfed consistently throughout the event taking home a Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar as the champion’s trophy.

What do you think of the various designs i’ve come up with for the ‘wight surf history’ project t-shirt ?

Please check out the 7 options over on wightsurfhistory.co.uk/wight-surf-history-t-shirts/ and let me know what they think about them? which one they’d prefer etc etc then that would be really cool.

And if t-shirts, or thinking about designs isn’t your thing, please ignore this message, it will self-destruct anyway, probably.
