Part Five of the ‘you should have been here yesterday’ photo blog from February 6th at Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight.

Been so long since we’ve had a decent swell to ride here (and photograph), and with summer almost here, its probably not going to pick up anytime soon, so i returned to archives for ‘that day’ back in February, and had a look at the shots that were overlooked at the time, I took over 700 pictures that day, so there’s plenty to choose from! I’ve also tried to keep the processing to a minimum, just the occasional bit of ‘punch’ and horizon straightening in Lightroom!

The shameless ‘psychofreak wetsuit for sale’ blog

I originally thought about writing this as a sort of nostalgic wetsuit review, comparing all the types of suit i’ve worn over the years, starting with a custom made second skin from the factory in Braunton, North Devon (i still remember how lovely that neoprene felt at the time), moving onto rip-curl from my local surf shop on the island (Offshore sports, Shanklin) and lately billabong & o’neill mostly brought online because its cheaper that way, and then casually leading up to the fact that i’ve ~~got~~ HAD an almost new o’neill psycho freak wetsuit for sale over on ebay.

Then i thought i shouldn’t do it at all, as the site should remain pure and only deal with surfing and waves (i’ve never taken any ads or promos on the site, despite requests)

But in the end i thought it best just to come out with it, make it a shameless plug, its my site why not good wetsuits are a vital part of surfing in the UK, and the changes over the last 10-15 years mean you can probably have twice as much time in the water on a winters day, and thats when the best waves are here, so maybe a little discussion about suits wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

And this blog has another angle too, vanity, and perhaps its an angle a few people can relate to, pretending that the advancing years are having no effect and i can still fit into the same size suit as i did 15 years ago. I got seduced by all the hi-tec jargon for the new ‘pyschofreak’ winter suits, and i let my desire blind me to the fact that the one i was looking at was a size medium, and i’ve really been too big for a medium for a few years now.

The ebay listing is WAS full of all that technical gumpf that worked on me, describing the ‘state of the art’ technology making it the warmest suit ever made etc.. And the fact is, it is the warmest suit i’ve ever tried, i actually felt warm out there in it, and i tried it on two of the coldest days this winter, so i’m genuinely disappointed to ~~be selling~~ HAVE SOLD it, but i need to wear a large and wearing a suit thats too small isnt good for your back or you’re surfing so its ~~got~~HAD to go.

Not much in the way of new swell to talk about, so i’ve put together a few shots from last month, a few days after the ‘perfect saturday’ when there were still a few nice ones sneaking quietly through and if you were in the right place at the right time, you could have a session all by yourself. Nothing really special in way of waves or action, but I think the best thing about these shots is that pacey looks like he’s got no head in three of them!

and a bonus sequence of pacey making the most of a little one that same day, the 12 shots took place over 13 seconds, but somehow its become 30 seconds long in iMovie because i messed about with the ‘ken burns’ settings and i dont really know what i’m doing

I’m still sifting through the hundreds of pictures taken on Saturday the 6th feb, i noticed a lot of people throwing their hands in the air that day, the offshore winds created plenty of critical sections where that extra bit of balance was required, and todays photo-blog is a little collection based on that.

Its not very often a surfing shot makes it to the front page of Flickr explore these days (i dont think i’ve had one out of the 596 that have made it to explore) so i was really pleased to see “Life is just a series of peaks and troughs” make it there this week.

Just a photo-blog today, lovely swell at the weekend but i’ve not too much to say about it this morning and have to get on with the day job. Here’s a random selection of shots from the hundreds i took on Saturday, the camera makes some of the waves look mellow, but there really were a few heavy closeout sets too, it made for great watching at the bay, and a few epic rides between the beatings.

There were quite a few eye witness’s to Al Reed’s full on barrel ride, but sadly i dont think anyone manged to get a shot of it, there is one included here of him going into one another one, but he didnt make it out this time.
