Play that Funky SUP – Stand up paddle surfing on the Isle of Wight
A slightly different view of Stand up paddle surfing on the Isle of Wight. Shot with the 500mm sigma zoon lens, this tight crop makes me think of playing funky bass guitar for some reason, and i really like the bokeh caused by the light on the breaking wave. Play that Funky SUP – Stand [...]
The Sweeper – Isle of Wight SUP
Another Isle of Wight SUP photo, and again its looking at stand up paddle boarding in Compton Bay. This 2 frame vertorama (vertical panorama) composition is all about reinforcing the space and sense of freedom. Isle of Wight Water Sports
It’s pouring down with rain here again this morning so i’m forced to dig out a bit of sunshine and Isle of Wight Water Sports from the archives. I found a few more different views of stand-up-paddle boarding in Compton Bay from that time when the sun was shining (seems like longer than a few weeks [...]
One man and his gull – Stand up Paddle Surfing
Another from the Stand up Paddle Surfing (SUP) shoot at Compton Bay, Isle of Wight, on a gloriously sunny and warm spring evening. Using the sigma 50-500mm telephoto lens and deliberately shot into the sun for a silhouette and maximum shimmering sea. It was then edited up into a Vertorama (vertical panorama), and finished off using [...]
We are sailing (well stand up paddle boarding actually)
A bit more stand up paddle boarding (SUP) action from Compton Bay, Isle of Wight, on a gloriously sunny and warm spring evening last week. Bit of luck getting the yacht in the background! Deliberately shot into the sun for a silhouette and maximum shimmering sea, and then edited up into a Vertical panorama, and [...]
On golden pond ( SUP on the Isle of Wight )
A bit of stand-up paddle board action from Compton Bay (SUP on the Isle of Wight). On a gloriously sunny and warm spring evening earlier this week. Using the Sigma 50-500mm I deliberately shot it into the sun for a silhouette and maximum shimmering sea effect. I then edited up into a Vertorama, and finally used [...]
The swell that kept on coming…
So, its five days and counting now that this spring swell has hung around, and thats pretty good going for the south coast, especially accompanied by offshore winds. Only had time for a really quick surf at lunchtime, and no photos either, but i did get back in the evening to shoot a few SUP’s [...]
I was there yesterday!! an overdue surf blog.
Following up on the theme of my last surf blog, where i’d missed out on the good swell at Freshwater Bay because i had to stay in and have my broadband line fixed. This time i’m happy to write about the waves I did get on a glorious days surfing at Compton Bay, on the [...]
Mustang Sally – Lady Surfer
This shot was conceived as an idea to update one of my all time fave photos “Portrait of a Psychedelic Surfer” but this time with a female perspective and a lady surfer. Of course it has nothing like the same spark, as this was contrived where the original was a spontaneous reaction to the way [...]
The Surf on the Isle of Wight is head high (if you squat right down)
To be honest, the Surf on the Isle of Wight is probably not even that big today, but i’m just daydreaming of summer days at the beach and found this old shot of longboarding a lovely little wave at Compton Bay from back in 2009. Real waves on their way though, there’s a nice big deep [...]
Freshwater Bay Monday Blues
First day out with the camera in 2012 and it was a trip to my old stomping ground of Freshwater Bay to catch some winter waves. Bit of a paddle out if you fancied a surf on this particular day at Freshwater Bay! Not surprisingly there were no takers with the strong onshore winds and massive close-out sets that [...]
I should have been there yesterday (The story of Isle of Wight surfing)
Isle of Wight Surfing. Returning to a familiar theme for this blog, and probably for most people who ever done a bit of Isle of Wight surfing too, the old ‘you should have been here yesterday’ routine. Over the last 20 years I’ve built my life next to the sea and the West Wight in [...]
The morning after the night before…
Sitting here today, on a miserable grey December day, looking out the window at howling on-shores blowing out any chance of getting any decent waves, and i’m looking back over a few pics from a surf session that i voluntarily missed out on a few weeks back. I wasn’t too busy, i didn’t have to be somewhere [...]
The Art of Flight (a surfer’s perspective)
The endless summer is over, hurricane swells are finally on the horizon, and it’s time to get back in the water and do some surfing here on the Isle of Wight. But before I dive into the sea and finally wash away those months of calm sea summer blues, I’m blogging today about the new [...]
Archive surfing #1
I found a few shots that got overlooked, neglected, or fell down the back of the sofa
Bodyboarding in Cornwall
Bodyboarding in Cornwall, originally uploaded by s0ulsurfing. Another treasure found languishing in the archives, bringing back memories from a fun day at Porthcurno beach in Cornwall, without doubt one of my favourite places in the world. Still no sign of the littlest soulsurfer yet, but we must be getting closer, if you don’t hear from [...]
Hipsta Holidays
Finally remembered to upload some photos from my iphone, here’s a SOOC hipstamatic view of the lighthouse and beach at Godrevy with little fluffy clouds and surfers.

I should have been here yesterday.
Seems like every week since that first september swell arrived here on the isle of wight that we’ve been blessed with decent waves, and I think i’ve been spoilt this autumn by an unusually high number of days with good surfing conditions.
The perfect wave!
OK, maybe its not THE perfect wave
but its definitely a really nice one coming through at Godrevy, Cornwall.
