The tenuous surfing link restaurant review / blog – Justin Brown at Farringford

Justin Brown at Farringford

Yesterday was my girlfriend’s birthday and seeing as she puts up with cooking for me and my son william all year round, i thought it might be a nice idea to treat her to a night off and take her to a fancy restaurant. Living in West Wight can narrow down the choices for fancy [...]

Compton Fields Beach Clean, Isle of Wight

What a waste

A quick photo-blog about the beach clean that took place earlier today at Compton Fields on the Isle of Wight. The bad news is the sheer amount of crap, the good news is that people are prepared to do something about it, so well done to all those that turned up on a cold and [...]

The swell that kept on coming…

Jason Swain, going left at Compton

So, its five days and counting now that this spring swell has hung around, and thats pretty good going for the south coast, especially accompanied by offshore winds. Only had time for a really quick surf at lunchtime, and no photos either, but i did get back in the evening to shoot a few SUP’s [...]

I was there yesterday!! an overdue surf blog.

Jason Swain at Compton Bay, by Paul Blackley

Following up on the theme of my last surf blog, where i’d missed out on the good swell at Freshwater Bay because i had to stay in and have my broadband line fixed. This time i’m happy to write about the waves I did get on a glorious days surfing at Compton Bay, on the [...]

Mustang Sally – Lady Surfer

Mustang Sally - Lady Surfer

This shot was conceived as an idea to update one of my all time fave photos “Portrait of a Psychedelic Surfer” but this time with a female perspective and a lady surfer. Of course it has nothing like the same spark, as this was contrived where the original was a spontaneous reaction to the way [...]

The Surf on the Isle of Wight is head high (if you squat right down)

Compton Bay

To be honest, the Surf on the Isle of Wight is probably not even that big today, but i’m just daydreaming of summer days at the beach and found this old shot of longboarding a lovely little wave at Compton Bay from back in 2009. Real waves on their way though, there’s a nice big deep [...]

I should have been there yesterday (The story of Isle of Wight surfing)

longboard

Isle of Wight Surfing. Returning to a familiar theme for this blog, and probably for most people who ever done a bit of Isle of Wight surfing too, the old ‘you should have been here yesterday’ routine. Over the last 20 years I’ve built my life next to the sea and the West Wight in [...]

The morning after the night before…

Paul Blackley Longboarding

Sitting here today, on a miserable grey December day, looking out the window at howling on-shores blowing out any chance of getting any decent waves, and i’m looking back over a few pics from a surf session that i voluntarily missed out on a few weeks back. I wasn’t too busy, i didn’t have to be somewhere [...]

The Art of Flight (a surfer’s perspective)

The Art of Flight

The endless summer is over, hurricane swells are finally on the horizon, and it’s time to get back in the water and do some surfing here on the Isle of Wight. But before I dive into the sea and finally wash away those months of calm sea summer blues, I’m blogging today about the new [...]

I should have been here yesterday.

Backhand Barney Barnes

Seems like every week since that first september swell arrived here on the isle of wight that we’ve been blessed with decent waves, and I think i’ve been spoilt this autumn by an unusually high number of days with good surfing conditions.

September Swells on the IOW, looks can be deceiving (1 of 2)

September Swells on the IOW, looks can be deceiving (1 of 2), originally uploaded by s0ulsurfing. Fingers crossed we have more waves on the way this weekend, so i’m clearing out the archives in expectation of them. Is Ross Williams just about to slip into a little barrel? or does that look suspiciously like a [...]

Fingers crossed for some new hurricane swell on the way (next weekend if we’re lucky), and i’ve finally got around to sorting out a few more photos from the great swell at the beginning of the month.

It’s the first solid swell since i got the Canon 7d, so as well as enjoying some proper waves myself, i made sure to hang around and take lots of photos too.

The Psychedelic Surfer has left the building!

That’s it now, the last batch of surf photos from the last big day, maybe we’ll get another good swell now that they are all gone.
