Dawn Patrol by Jason Swain. The third photo blog in as many days with a few photos from this mornings low tide surfing at Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. Lots more to come…
All photos shot with the Sigma 5o-500mm telephoto lens on a Canon 6d camera body, mostly shot from the right hand side of the bay, on or close to the cabbage patch, tricky spot in the morning as you can be shooting right into to the sun at times but occasionally you’ll get some silhouetted action that makes it all worth it.

These are amazing! I really didn’t know that any surfing took place on the Island! We are very excited to be moving to Island in next few months after years of holidays there! We have never seen the seas like this as we visit usually in May time. So I am really looking forward to seeing the seas 365! We are moving to Whitwell village but the whole southern coastline will be my focal point for walks & photography! PS my house has stunning views over St Catherine’s Down and even when we viewed property in January we saw an amazing sunset – can’t wait to be there! Do you ever find out who these surfers are? I’m sure they would love a huge photo of themselves riding the waves…. Do you do workshops or one-to-on tuition???
Hi Sue and thanks for the kind words. Yes, i know most of the people surfers, i’m a surfer too and most are my friends. I’m sure you’ll love living on the Island, i know i do 🙂 And sorry no, i don’t do workshops. One to one tuition is possible, but the hourly rate i need to charge for my business probably make that a non-starter, I know the college run some good photography courses, maybe thats an option?
Nice to see this…The school run meant I got there too late for the tide but I surfed further down the cost as a consolation; The set waves after a long paddle were quite a test!
IMG 2072 looked a blast! Looking forward to further instalments. Thanks,
Thanks Dan, I think wherever you surfed over the last few days would have been amazing!
I’m so pleased to see that surfing does take place on Island….as a non-surfer I guess its probably mostly winter/storm surf? We have only been in May/June and sea didn’t look surfable then! You can tell you are a surfer as you know where to go and stand for the shots! Brilliant – thaks for comments about colleges/photography – but I may still look into one-to-one at later date!
PS – just saw that amazing panorama shot on your site – the light is awesome! Also some of the Freshwater Bay shots & from other comments do I take it that the sepia ones were the “true” colour of the day?? Brilliant! I do love a shot that isn’t tweeked & sometimes the true light just is that amazing – especially in unusual weather! I really can’t wait to be on Island……………………….
Thanks again Sue, you’re right that most of the good surf happens in the winter, and for a photographer a lot of the good light too, but its also a great place to be all year round! And ok, talk to me about the 1-2-1 thing when you are ready, cheers jason
